Yeah I'm technically not meant to be posting but HEY I WROTE THIS SO YOU SHOULD READ IT:

sephira: (rome)
Okay so this is a conversation we've had about eight times recently when we're both occupied doing something in the living area:

HUSBAND: You mind if I put something on in the background while you're over there?

ME: As long as it isn't one of those horrible depressing violent shows you always watch! Those cable period dramas have too much gratuitous sex and violence! No Blood Tits and Scowling shows!

HUSBAND: Wait. Didn’t you go out of your way to send me Spartacus: Blood and Sand when I was deployed?

ME: That was funny violence! Like 300!

HUSBAND: I do not follow.

ME: 300 is like a guy standing there and this monster’s like RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH and then this guy gets stabbed with like EIGHT SPEARS AT ONCE and goes flying off in SLOW MOTION! It's not realistic.

HUSBAND: Isn't Rome like your favorite TV series of all time?

ME: The sex and violence was necessary to the plot! They didn’t put in random 12-minute torture scenes just to fill in time because they ran out of ideas! Or guys jerking each other off on screen for several long, awkward minutes!

HUSBAND: THAT WAS ONE TIME AND I STOPPED WATCHING THE SHOW AFTER THAT

Am I being unreasonable here? Does liking comic violence disqualify me from complaining about realistic violence?

Also they have this thing called the Internet where I'd be sure to go if I wanted to watch naked people boning. But maybe I'm part of a small minority there since long graphic sex scenes are so popular in cable shows. Is there really this sizeable demographic out there who have lost their laptops and are like man I just cannot understand this character’s motivations unless he takes off his clothes and has awkward pretend-sex with this lady while covering up his lower half? Because I'm always there yelling JUST MOVE ON WITH THE PLOT OR SOMETHING FOR THE LOVE OF GOD MAKE THE SAXONS INVADE OR A FLOCK OF DEADLY BEES OH GOD ANYTHING I AM SO BORED DEAR JESUS WOULD IT KILL YOU GUYS TO SMILE ONCE IN A WHILE

sephira: (BALD EAGLE FUCK YEAH)
So this weekend we were on our way to Pendleton and decided to stop at the Vasquez Rocks. You are probably thinking "What the hell are they?" MOVIE GEEK PARADISE is what they are. According to a local movie-industry guy I was talking to, the rocks have long been a popular choice for moviemakers because they're close enough to LA  to fall within the limits of regulations of union laws and stuff, and yet still give the appearance of a desert-scape out in the middle of nowhere. Also, the rock formations are just weird as hell, so they provided a suitably 'alien' background in shows like Star Trek, Buck Rogers, and the original BSG. So the rocks played a big part in establishing the original Classic Spage Age sci-fi look we all know and love. I was reading on a blog somewhere lately about how fifty years ago, alien worlds looked like Los Angeles County desert planets, whereas now, they all look like British Columbia lush otherworldly forests. Then:

Now:

But even though all the cheap sci-fi has deserted us for Canada, the area has legit nerd history. )
sephira: (Bones: Booth and Brennan)
Sarah Connor Chronicles, why did they have to cancel you right when you were getting awesome? I am sad! I mean it is not like the Earth is suffering from a surplus of religious-themed sci-fi shows with Bear McCreary soundtracks!

Now I understand the feelings of all those people that weren't indifferent towards Firefly!

It took me a while to start to like it, because it unfortunately triggered a lot of the petty non-plot-based complaints that prevent me from enjoying 60% of the stuff I watch. )

Question

Does anyone know any fan theories/speculation in popular long-running book series/TV shows/movie franchises that were later debunked by canon, but which were actually better than the finished product? Like they made more sense or did a better job of explaining things, or they were just more interesting?

Like for example in Battlestar Galactica, a lot of the fan speculation about the cylons and Starbuck was better than what we actually got. Which was, uh, pretty bad.

I know there must be a bunch for Harry Potter, although I can't think of any.

ETA: major BSG spoilers in the comments.
sephira: (Supernatural: 80's pr0n stars)

I love writing about things I know! Although oddly, that one Supernatural reference was actually put in there by the picture-adding guys.

Also, thank you to those of you who recommended Castle as an example for one of the entries. I actually had no idea that show existed until then, and it's actually pretty fun.

Everyone seems to have thought that Supernatural was great this week, but CSI gave me dinosaurs and Katee Sackhoff. In the same episode. So they win.

And she was running holding a gun and totally tackled a guy and it was almost like old times.

Like the Bible Experience, only better. And the Bible Experience had Samuel L. Jackson as God, so... well, maybe not that much better. In fact, probably not as good at all. Sorry.
